When i return down there where no trace of the two lady... that's the most weird thing hapening to me so far." THE ROAR OF BRONZE DOORS by Zakena Plip I was showing Hydlaa to my cousin Kaloodakall, when an animal messenger "delivered" to me a slip of paper: "Come to outer bronzedoors, come now and come armed: we are under attack, with waves of crazed ulbers and maulbers! Signed: Giterin." We ran straight to the spot, an area around the bronze doors, well known to be the lair of dangerous monsters that usually do not reach far from their territories. There was already a discrete group, Gorub son of Grub, Kabitar, Shkirr and the solicitous Giterin, trying to stop what really looked like an invading force, a monstrous army that in all likelihood was heading to the vicinity of our beloved Hydlaa. Kaloodakall and me, a farmer and a bard, we were seriously scared in front of the ferocity of maulbernauts, ulbernauts and vilenauts who continued to gush seemingly from nowhere. It was scary, nonetheless we did our part resisting and fighting along with the brave heroes who first faced the invaders. In a short time, a continuous flow of heroes rushing to the scene has turned the situation to our advantage: Cormah, Sulaika, Poezza, Menille, Firke, Yenida, Evilia, Celroc, Celrau, Sanrai and Derator, all of them have fought bravely side by side. As the forces of resistance became more consistent, the invading forces increased in numbers and strength. Some Vile Maulberlods showed up and was and hard time for everyone. Everyone gave his best, everyone with his/her style: Firke and a few others faced the monsters unmounted, Evilia was jumping around confusing them before to strike, many others fought with magic and distance weapons. After countless hours of battle that seemed not lead to anything I've come up with a feeling: something was wrong. To fight the incessant waves of monsters seemed useless at that point. So, I sent my trusty cousin Kaloodakall to explore the nearby. He spotted a cave, from where the monsters were coming out, and then we started to shout untill all the warriors followed us to the valley where the cave was located. Over there, we saw the final battle and when the last leader of the ulbernaut invaders was killed, the silence finally fell in the valley... for now! THE BAUGHO AFFAIR by Zakena Plip Some time ago, I was walking peacefully outside the walls of East Hydlaa, when a large group of people, many of them on mounts, approached and surrounded me. "Zakena, did this man tell you about someone killing his daughter?", asked Sulaika pointing to a ynnwn apparently traveling with them. I had no idea of what it was going on and I said it openly; as an immediate reaction the ynnwn dashed towards the sewers with everyone at his heels. In a few moments he was recaptured, but Evilia, taken by an apparently inexplicable instinct, helped him escape again! The hunting party, formed by Kaerli, Sulaika, Sanrai, Sarren, Derator and Yenida (among others) chased him, and me myself I decided to help in the search for Baugho, thirsty for answers. After a few minutes of exploration, in the tortuous maze of the Hydlaa sewers, I finally stumbled on Baugho; Kaerli and Sanrai were already trying to corner him. Here is an excerpt of those dramatic moments: ***** Baugho steps back, trying to avoid the people in front of him.; he is ultimately cornered, seeing no way to escape. Kaerli: "So...tell us just what actually happened." Baugho: "Are you stupid or what?", says while attempts to spit at Kaerli. Kaerli: "We will find out the truth no matter what lies get told, you have nothing to gain by lying here." Zakena: "Baugho: Did you killed your daughter?" Baugho shakes his head: "I can't believe you idiots. There is no daughter." [...] Time passes and Baugho resists any kind of questioning. At the end, taken by anxiety, Baugho attempts to push through Kaerli and me. Kaerli lets her eyes glow with a greenish-brown color as Baugho pushes her aside; unfortunately for him he cannot escape the grip of the stone. Sanrai grabs a leg, and starts dragging. Kaerli pulls some rope out of her pack and begins to set to work trying up Baugho while a spell has him downed. Baugho is finally tied up. In short time the group reached Jefecra in high Hydlaa, handing the criminal to justice. There was a discreet crowd of onlookers and people who participated in the hunt. Jefecra handled the situation with hardness and all ended with the incarceration of Baugho, charged for bribery of a public official. ***** Now; more than a question arises, especially concerning the details of this affair. To set the record straight I've decided to realize a multiple interview, where the same questions were posed to different persons. 1) You was in the hunting party... how and when did you discover what was going on? What can you tell us about the hunt? Cormah: "Well I wasn't exactly in the original hunting party. Kaerli approached me and told me she wanted to investigate Baugho, that he seemed suspicious. She told me that she planned to lure him to camp banished for questioning and if he didn't cooperate he would learn that dakkru doesn't take bribes. Now, I was a bit worried that Kaerli would lose her temper and kill him before there was proof he was a criminal, so I sought out Sanrai and we decided to go to camp banished to observe events from afar and intervene if necessary. After extensive questioning at the camp and Kaerli producing a letter incriminating Baugho he decided to try and get us all to go to Hydlaa to meet you, since he tried to say his daughter had been killed. We argued that would have been the talk of hydlaa and in the journal, however he said it was after release, when he had spoken to Zakena. So we rode to hydlaa and we met you on the way..." Derator: "Kaerli sent me a groffel with a notice. She was trying to organize a group to deal with a spreader of curruption and asked me to come near the tavern and meet her. At the tavern were already some people, sulaika was among them and kaerli. Some People had the feeling that Kaerli would overdo it, since she spoke about killing Baugho so Sulaika mentioned that she would go with us just to stop Kaerli from overreacting then at some point we went to the camp really fast... We waited a bit for Baugho to arrive, then a huge argument came up..." Sarren: "Well" – he looks a bit embarrased - "miss Kaerli asked me to help her find someone that was 'using Tria as a sheild' and, well, I kinda thought she meant litteraly, and it seemed like a waste. So I followed her to convince him not to do such a silly thing... We showed up at the tavern with miss Sulika... ehm... sorry cant spell it right... who had already joined us and more people showed up as Kaerli asked the guard more information about him. People keept gathering and a small group formed... So the group decided to head to camp banished to question Baugho, because he was going to try to lure a guard out there, and the guard was convinced to let us go instead. Baugho tried to get the guard to come see him at the camp, but instead of the guard we, the group, went to meet and question him to try and confront him with corruption." Sulaika: "I was on my way" – she nods and seems a bit uncertain - "to the sewer and next to Percival I found Kaerli and Sarren, so I stopped and talked to them, but they were in hurry. So Kaerli told me, that the stranger from the glyph auction was bribing guards and they wanted to hunt him for his crime. Kaerli was talking first to Percival about that bribe, then she went to the enki next to ptrosaur asked him if he saw that crime and he sent us to Jefecra. Jefecra read a letter to Kaerli. And said that that crime was inviting him to meet him at camp banish. Jefreca said he wouldn't go there, but we could go there and do whatever we want with him. His hands were tied in this matter I think. So Kaerli said we would need to go to camp banish and punish him for what he did by killing him. I couldn't believe what she said and told her I would not kill him because we don't have the right to kill him. I said he should be prisoned for bribe. Kaerli promised me that I should talk to that crime first and then we would act." Kaerli: "Well, it all started with Baugho's attitude at the glyph auction. People who flaunt their wealth like that think they have nothing to fear, that money can buy their way out of all trouble, no? That made me think there was something up with him, and then later, talking with Darphen, he asked me to help him with some paperwork, and I find this letter written to him from a tax official on a lower level that implicates Baugho in a bribery scheme down there. From there, it was just a matter of getting to him; while the guards and the Pterosaur master weren't of that much help at first, I was pointed to Jefecra, who cued me in on Baugho wanting to meet him at Camp Banished. We met him there...it was Evilia, Yenida, Sulaika... Cormah and Sanrai were there, and Sarren as well. There was a bit of a debate between me and several others about how to handle him when he arrived...we encircled him, and tried to talk him into surrendering, but he refused. We finally were able to get him to head into town to try to find someone who claimed to be his daughter...but then he took off for the sewers, where I found him huddling in a corner." 2) Do you think that Baugho is a maverick, a loose dog, or that he's involved with something bigger, that there is someone else behind this story? Cormah: "I think others are involved from what I could see his knowledge of the guards and the inner workings of Hydlaa were quite flawed, he also didn't seem to be the brightest fellow just used a lot of big words. Well... you saw him at the glyph auction yes? He was antagonising people, not a verysmart criminal to draw attention to himself. I would think he was the face behind the operation and with him gone the organiser hopes to avoid further suspicion." Derator: "I don't know exactly, but at the auction day there was much tria involved, not sure a loose dog can make that much tria alone, and I would guess someone who can bribe some higher officals would have "some" connections." Sarren: "A man like that" – he looks around nervously - "is always part of something bigger, you don't start an operation like that with out some serious help." Sulaika: "I didn't knew him. Only saw him once at the glyph auction. I saw that people got mad at him. Baugho was kinda a good liar. He tried to gain all our trust and to go against Kaerli . But we were all question him a lot. I think that there is someone else behind this story but don't ask me who. I just got that feeling in my stomach like a intution..." Kaerli: "I suspect he's just out for himself, personally; although he might be trying to find a way to retaliate for this. I wouldn't know for sure, of course." THE MASKED FENKI by Zakena Plip Some time ago I was passing between the pterosaurs service and Harnquist's workshop, when I heard some moans coming from the tent of the sanatorium. Apparently Roled had been poisoned, and with him also Evirea, that tried to suck the poison out. In the tent there was also Sarren, severely wounded in the arm. Despite an initial reluctance of the first responders, at the end Gehis the dwarf decided to tell me what he saw: "I was wandering through the plaza, just minding my own business. I saw a woman and Enki woman, that is, and my friend Sarren in the plaza. I also noticed a masked woman kind of hiding my the stairway. I thought it was kind of odd, so I stuck around to see what was going on. I wasn't really paying full attention, but the masked woman sort of dashed into the crowd and took a seat. She's a creepy looking broad, but she's never wronged me or anything, but others swears the woman's a thief. Suddenly the masked woman takes off, Prrta- another fenki, nearly knocks me on my rump trying to catch her. I don't know why exactly. So then I heard someone scream about needing a healing. I suddenly felt sick, Like that feeling you get when something has broken, and you know it cannot be undone. We all dropped everything and ran to see what was going on. Kull and that fenki with the little dress and all. So when I ran behind the buildings close to the sanatorium, I saw Sarren and thiefy mask lady standing up against the wall. Sarren had a sword or blade or something stuck in his arm. There was a huge crowd standing around - and not a healing in sight. So I ran off screaming at the top of my lungs for help. Again, the sight of all the blood had me wanting to hurl. Just the sight of it felt so wong, like this should never have happened. I think the thief lady stuck Sarren, she must have. Yes, she stabbed him with it violently. That's how it got in his arm. What a terrible thing to do. It was a disgusting mess, there was blood spurting out and this gut wrenching discussion about how to make him stop bleeding. I just had to get away. It was too much all at once." No one else has been able to tell me anything about this mysterious Masked Fenki, nor of why she might have done something so extreme, although an informer that has opted to remain anonymous confirmed to me: "That weird masked woman.. the masked thief... She has an axe to grind with Roled! She... seems to think that he's rather corrupt, that he's up to something nasty and that she's somehow a victim of his shenanigans. I honestly don't know who to believe in all this." The days have passed and many healers have come and gone to put an end to the torments of Roled and Evirea. In the end, Sarren was able to recover and something happened that gave a twist to the story: a strange mask was found by Zalya. According to the report of Sarren and Anysu the mask had some initials and the name "Oja" carved in it, so a small group (among them Anysu, Sarren, Prreta, and Zayla) questioned merchants in Ojaveads about the initial on mask and figured might be a crafters mark. After a long search, the group was finally able to retrieve a vital information: the name of the apothecary who made the poison and therefore who knows the antidote. In all this, Sarren was attacked again and found himself in the sanatorium after a couple of days of coma, but at least it all ended for the best and everyone is alive. Many questions remain to be clarified, but as they say: all's well that ends well. And Roled? Seems to have remained in a state of confusion. These were his words about the incident: "Apparently there was a poisoning , what a terrible busines! I heard Lady Evirea was poisoned, or maybe she was asleep. I am not sure. I was... I am ... well I went home waiting for Lattia to come home from mining so we could have supper.. I hear Sir Sarren has composed new music for the Ierefel Festival. I hope to be there." A REVIEW OF THE DRAFT CONSTITUTION AND THE NOISE AROUND IT by Professor Cirerey Chirey At the request of several people who I know and respect I have begun a review of the draft "constitution" that has been circulated relentlessly by certain persons. I will also cover the reactions to it to some extent. I will not copy the entire constitution here as it is quite long. I will merely comment on it to the best of my abilities. The "Constitution" claims it is an extension to the Octarchal decree of 425 AY. I believe it may have taken it as a baseline but it is a completely different thing. It is so much more complicated that it could require the development of a new class of scholars to interpret it. While it retains the current order of Octarchs and Vigesimi it adds entirely new layers in the form of a high court and the "constitution" itself, which is somehow above the Octarchs. I found this concept confusing at best. And then there is the matter of elections. While I am aware of historic examples of Octarch's and Vigesimi who were not good leaders I am uncertain the proposed system would do better. There is also the feeling of wrongness it produces. What is next? Electing the gods to worship? It just feels disrespectful. Section two is less disturbing to me, an enumeration of rights and responsibilities. Many of them could be guaranteed by Octarchal decree. It enumerates many rights, some of them too obvious to bother mentioning, and some quite obscure. But there are a few items in there worthy of further discussion in my opinion. Likewise section three, while overly complicated and consisting largely of details few should care about, is interesting in theory. These sections are by and large not terribly controversial. Some of them may be valuable Some of them may be best implemented by dropping them into a burial well. A few are just silly and impractical. But there is no harm in discussing any of them. And unlike section one there is nothing anyone could consider seditious or disrespectful. Section four redeems section one in my opinion. It is titled "Means of enactment and amendment". The means of enactment specified would require the approval of the Octarchs. This would seem to make it the tamest instrument of rebellion ever seen. As a request and petition it may be impolite, but goes no farther to harm the government than a groffel's bark. For that reason I think the anger and hostility surrounding this issue is greatly overwrought. A group of people believe they have ways to make Yliakum better. They may be wrong, but we can discuss this among ourselves without assuming there is evil intent on anyone's part. Be at peace and be blessed people of Yliakum, from Octarchs to rat catchers. IEREFAL FESTIVAL: AN EXAMPLE OF WILL by Zakena Plip Ierefal the festival was celebrated recently, and as usual it was an opportunity to meet and to celebrate. It's when every citizen should think about their ancestors and their sacrifice to lead them tho a better place. Many people gathered, each bringing something to share ... including bombs. You heard right, bombs! In fact, the ceremony was celebrated twice, the first of which many people got injured due to a bomb planted by unknown persons, for unknown reasons. Nevertheless, not even this prevented the strong spirit of the inhabitants of The Dome to bend to resignation; the festivities took place, more intense than ever with local gastronomy, storytelling, intercultural market and interesting exhibitions, showing the right Ierefal spirit. =================================== | | | YOUR ADVERTISE HERE? | | Contact the editor! | | ==================================== __________________________ << THE REVIEW OF THE MONTH A small space dedicated to writers, where we'll review a book every month. SANRAI'S PLANTS AND OTHER SUNDRIES II by Zakena Plip While a sundrie, technically, is a word used to refer to miscellaneous small items, usually of no large value or too numerous to be mentioned separately, this book deserves to be mentioned... and of course: separately! That's why i decided to dedicate the "Review if the Month" to this useful guide written by Sanrai, a book that helps us to get closer to the world of herbalism in a practical and detailed way. The book is about plant parts and their effects, but it also talks about the diseases and how to cure them, as well as some other sundries such as fish and animal parts. Definitely, Sanrai's Plants and Other Sundries II is a recommended reading for anyone who wants to learn more about nature and its gifts. ***************************** K A E R L I ' S Finest Potions of Curing Three circles apiece or one-fourty-four for a lot o' sixty!
